Hi, I’m Susan Hodges, Director of Love to be Green Floral Design Workshops, Qualified Florist and Professional Qualified Educator.
I have taught City & Guilds Courses in Floral Design, Floristry and Flower Arranging within local Adult Education Centres for Devon County Council. Alongside these courses I have been holding my own independent non accredited flower courses and flower workshops in my local area of Newton Abbot, Devon for more than 15 years.
From ‘Fashion Design’ - ‘Floral Design’ - 'Floral Educator'
I have always had a very strong interest in art and design and this became more intense after studying a two year full time Fashion Design and Art course in North West London. After completing the course I began a career as a Dress Designer for a company in London’s fashionable West End.
During my career and being employed within the fashion industry, I enjoyed working with textures, colours and styles, designing and creating bespoke garments for seasonal fashion ranges where my designs attracted much interest from the buyers of well-known retail outlets such as John Lewis, House of Fraser, Jacques Vert, H&M, and Jane Norman to name a few.
After relocating from London to Devon in 2001 I found there was something about being enveloped by beautiful countryside and nature which inspired me. So drawing on a strong design background, I transferred my design skills and experience into another passion of mine-
...to design with flowers!
After more years of studying this time in the floral industry, I acquired Floristry and Floral Design qualifications as a student of Bicton College, East Devon. I also hold Professional Teaching qualifications after completing City & Guilds Adult and Further Education courses Part 1 & 2 in 2003 with Torbay Council.
Invaluable hands on experience working in local florist shops gave me the motivation to set up my own Florist business where I have worked as a professional florist for more than 10 years.
Whilst managing my business Love to be Green Designer Florists in Devon, I enjoyed creating gorgeous bespoke floral arrangements for weddings and special events, locally and the surrounding areas. I also created flower designs for wedding couples as far afield as Windsor in Berkshire and the Cotswold's in Gloustershire. Alongside supplying wedding flowers I also have had the privilege in providing a specialist bespoke flower service for Sympathy and Funeral flowers for families within my local area.
I’ve been very lucky to have my Daughter Laura help in designing the workshops. You will see Laura from time to time when she lends her support within the sessions. She is full of fresh ideas and extremely artistic with a natural flare for design. Laura has a passion for being creative and always enjoys working with the attendees during the session to help them achieve their creative goal.
Laura has more than 10 years’ experience in Retail Management working in the Fashion and Beauty industries in London. Throughout these years Laura has gained excellent customer service skills and being customer focused is paramount to her. Laura’s transferable skills are an huge asset when we have her company during the sessions.
So now, Love to be Green Florists have decided it's a good time to focus all energies solely on our Floral Design Workshops. I have found that floristry is a profession in which you are always learning, experimenting and training. I am eager to pass on all the inspiring creative techniques which I have learned throughout these years along with newest trends in Floral Designs and Flower crafts.
We are hugely grateful to all our customers for whom we have had the opportunity to work with on designing bespoke floral designs for over the last 10 years at Love to be Green Florists.
